DESCRIPTION This study-unit is an introduction to fixed and removable prosthodontics and offers the students an understanding of the different methods available for the construction of heavily broken down teeth and the replacement of missing teeth. It aims to help the aspiring dental surgery assistant to develop knowledge on prosthodontic procedures.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of this study-unit are to introduce the dental surgery assistant student to the discipline of Prosthodontics. It will discuss the various branches of this field, as well as the materials, equipment and techniques used during patient treatment. The special link between this discipline and dental technology shall be emphasized.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. INTRODUCTION TO PROSTHODONTICS:
• Define the different branches of Prosthodontics and outline the different procedures carried out in the discipline;
• Memorize the terminology and definitions related to Prosthodontics;
• Describe the role of the Dental Surgery Assistant with respect to Prosthodontics;
• Recognize their role as part of the multidisciplinary team involved in providing Prosthodontic treatment to patients, especially with respect to the dental technology laboratory.

2. REMOVABLE PROSTHODONTICS– COMPLETE AND PARTIAL DENTURES:
• List the different types of dentures and their benefit to the patient;
• Describe the clinical steps involved in the fabrication and maintenance of removable prostheses;
• Identify the dental instruments, equipment and materials used and explain their usage;
• Review the principles of standard cross-contamination procedures with respect to the clinical handling of dentures;
• Discuss the preventive advice provided to patients receiving removable prostheses.

3. FIXED PROSTHODONTICS - CROWN AND BRIDGE WORK:
• List the different types of post core systems and fixed prostheses;
• List and explain the steps involved in fabrication in fixed prosthodontics;
• Identify the materials, instruments and equipment utilised in fixed prosthodontics;
• Review the principles of standard cross-contamination procedures with respect to fixed Prosthodontics;
• Discuss preventive advice provided to patients with respect to fixed prosthodontics.

4. IMPLANTOLOGY:
• Define an implant and label the different parts of an implant prosthesis;
• Discuss the clinical steps involved in the provision of an implant prosthesis;
• List the equipment, instruments, components and materials used during the provision of an implant prosthesis;
• Recall basic hygiene instructions and smoking cessation advice in relation to the overall success of implants.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. INTRODUCTION TO FIXED AND REMOVABLE PROSTHODONTICS:
• Identify the different types of prostheses available for oral rehabilitation;
• Recognize particular instances that require close-support assistance;
• Communicate effectively with all the members of the dental team and the patient.

2. REMOVABLE PROSTHODONTICS - COMPLETE AND PARTIAL DENTURES:
• Identify the different types of removable dentures;
• Prepare the operatory for removable prosthodontic treatment;
• Demonstrate appropriate impression material manipulation;
• Complete effective disinfection, storage, correct labelling and safe packaging of clinical work which needs to be sent to the lab;
• Pour dental impressions properly;
• Provide proper preventive and denture wear advice to the patient.

3. FIXED PROSTHODONTICS - CROWN AND BRIDGEWORK and IMPLANTOLOGY:
• Recognize the different types of fixed prostheses and post/core systems;
• Identify the various implant system components;
• Prepare the operatory for fixed prosthodontic treatment;
• Prepare and handle the appropriate impression material required by the operator;
• Aid the clinician with soft tissue retraction and moisture control;
• Complete effective disinfection, storage, correct labeling and safe packaging of impressions that need to be sent to the lab;
• Establish proper disinfection of all used equipment and instruments after patient departure and execution of proper cross contamination procedures;
• Describe effective preventive methods to patients which allows better oral health.

ADDITIONAL NOTES Attendance to scheduled sessions, inclusive of lectures/tutorials, practical, laboratory and clinical components is compulsory. Students who do not attend at least 90% of the scheduled sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below.
