MQF LEVEL | 5 | ||||||||
ECTS CREDITS | 4 | ||||||||
DEPARTMENT | Oral Rehabilitation and Community Care | ||||||||
DESCRIPTION | This one-year study-unit introduces students to the field of Periodontics. It is designed to bridge their preclinical and clinical training providing a foundation of the basic science and clinical concepts that will be built on over the duration of the course. Study-Unit Aims: Dental hygienists´ primary focus is on oral health promotion and disease prevention. Dental hygienists must be aware of the scientific basis that underpins the treatment they provide. They have to incorporate behavioural, social and biomedical science knowledge in order to generate evidence-based judgements. This study-unit aims to provide the students with an understanding of basic sciences in relation to periodontics, which will provide the foundations for more in depth studies of the aetiology and pathogenesis later on in the course. It also aims to provide a basic theoretical and clinical knowledge of how to diagnose and manage the two main periodontal disease (gingivitis and periodontitis). Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe both normal and pathological signs of periodontal disease. - Describe an overview of the aetiology and pathogenesis of periodontal diseases - Define gingivitis and periodontitis - Discuss the incidence and prevalence of periodontal diseases in their community and in the world. - Describe how to take a comprehensive history from a patient - Outline the principles of a full clinical examination of a patient - Describe the techniques used to assess a patients oral hygiene status - Describe the periodontal probing techniques which are used for detecting changes in periodontal tissues. - Formulate a care plan for a patient with gingivitis or periodontitis - Describe the steps of treatment for managing stage 1 to 3 periodontitis 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify from the histories factors that will affect the management of the patient. - Perform an extra-oral examination and identify common pathologies. - Examine the soft and hard tissues and identify common oral diseases and disorders including (but not necessarily limited to): dental caries, gingival, periodontal, and peri-implant diseases, and other soft tissue pathologies. - Evaluate clinically a patient's oral hygiene status and periodontal health. - Identify local and systemic risk factors for periodontal disease. - Formulate a diagnosis and care plan. - Manage clinically patients presenting with gingivitis and periodontitis. - Evaluate a patient's response to treatment. - Propose further treatment after the completion of initial therapy.
