DESCRIPTION The study-unit will provide Dental Technology students with a thorough appreciation of how dental diseases occur and thus how they can be prevented, also giving an in depth focus on the principles of health promotion as applied to the dental field.

They will be able to give evidence based advice when it comes to situations encountered in the practice of dental technology.

Topics to be covered shall include epidemiology, the factors determining oral health, the relationship between oral health and general health, diet and nutrition and the principles of oral health promotion. The role of General Preventive Strategies and Public Health Education in the reduction of disease and inequalities shall also be discussed.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit will provide dental technology students with a thorough appreciation of how dental diseases occur and thus how they can be prevented. They will be able to give evidence based advice when it comes to patient or public situations encountered in the practice of dental technology.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain how social, cultural and environmental factors contribute to general and oral health;
- Comprehend the principles of prevention and oral health promotion and know how to apply them in practice;
- Define, in basic terms, local demographic and social trends, oral health trends, and determinants of health and inequalities in health;
- Relate their roles and responsibilities as part of the dental team;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the evidence based relationship between sugar consumption and caries development and thus understand the importance of reducing sugar consumption on an individual and population level;
- Explain the methods and importance of effective communication taking into account personal beliefs and preferences;
- Discuss dental education models, theories and the process of behavioural change;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of measuring dental disease and know how to best apply these principles in practice;
- Assess preventive and health promotion approaches appropriate for the prevention of dental diseases;
- Identify the materials available clinically to control oral diseases.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe the concepts of oral health and general well-being;
- Recall theoretical knowledge and apply it to the various practice settings;
- Prepare and use oral health education aids (models, visual aids and leaflets);
- Employ professional communication skills and provide evidence-based information on diet, oral health problems and suitable oral hygiene techniques for all sectors of the community;
- Outline and apply the principles of measuring dental disease;
- Outline and apply the principles of prevention and oral health promotions;
- Explain and apply techniques in reducing sugar consumption on an individual and population level;
- Identify the materials available clinically to control oral diseases.
