DESCRIPTION | This study-unit presents fixed prosthodontics as a treatment option to restore the single tooth that has been damaged. The student is taken through all the necessary clinical and laboratory steps involved to become competent in this field. Focus is given to the wide variety of materials available to the dental technologist to deliver a durable fixed restoration. Study-unit Aims: The aims of the study-unit are to prepare the student to: - Deliver single tooth temporary prostheses. - Deliver single tooth final prostheses in metal alloy, porcelain fused to metal alloy and all ceramic dental materials. - Understand the importance of occlusion when new fixed prostheses are introduced in the mouth. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Discuss the fabrication of single tooth temporary prostheses. - Discuss the fabrication of single tooth final prostheses in the various dental materials available and the available techniques. - Discuss the importance of occlusion when new fixed prostheses are introduced in the mouth. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Construct temporary crowns. - Construct a complete gold crown. - Construct a porcelain fused to metal alloy crown. - Construct an all-ceramic crown. - Carve teeth in inlay wax in preparation for ceramic veneers. - Carve wax crowns in preparation for scanning and milling.
