DESCRIPTION This one-year study-unit in which students continue to provide prosthodontic and periodontic treatment in the context of rehabilitating adult patients. Patients treated should have a variety of limitations and impairments including complete and partially edentulous patients and patients requiring treatment of advanced periodontitis.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to provide the student with the clinical setting to plan and provide complete and partial dentures to patients and to provide non-surgical periodontal treatment on patients with more advanced periodontal disease.

By the end of this study-unit, the student is expected to complete successfully at least:
- 3 Complete dentures
- 4 Partial acrylic dentures
- 1 Cast partial denture
- 1 Immediate denture
- 1 Overdenture
- Completed full periodontal treatment including assessment & reassessment of 4 patients with moderate/severe disease
- Undertake partially treat of 6 other periodontal cases.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe correctly patient clinical charts and presenting complaints in clinical practice;
- Discuss the clinical steps in providing and maintaining dentures to a variety of partially and fully edentulous patients;
- Appreciate how the information gathered from the history and examination to formulate a diagnosis and treatment plan (with alternatives);
- Evaluate a patient’s oral hygiene and then instruct the patient on the use of the appropriate oral hygiene aid(s) and correct behavioural science technique(s);
- Describe how to formulate a treatment plan and carry out the appropriate treatment and identify the need for adjunctive therapies;
- Discuss how patients may benefit from surgical intervention/ referral.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Collect medical and clinical data;
- Interpret correctly patient clinical charts and presenting complaints in clinical practice;
- Communicate with the patient and dental technologist the most appropriate clinical treatment;
- Organise the sequencing of all the clinical steps involved in fabricating and maintaining dentures;
- Apply different impressions techniques used in fabrication of complete and partial dentures;
- Apply different jaw relation record procedures;
- Select teeth that are appropriate for the patient's needs;
- Carry out trial wax dentures;
- Provide and maintain complete and partial dentures;
- Identify both healthy(normal) and pathological signs of periodontal tissues;
- Accurately carry out periodontal probing techniques;
- Identify occlusal trauma/ traumatic occlusion;
- Take the appropriate radiographs, interpret their findings and write a radiographic report;
- Carry out initial therapy using the correct scaling and root surface debridement techniques (both with hand and power scaling instruments);
- Evaluate the results of periodontal therapy;
- Design and implement an appropriate maintenance therapy programme and evaluation of aftercare.

RULES/CONDITIONS Before TAKING THIS UNIT YOU MUST PASS ORC3100 AND PASS ORC3107 AND PASS ORC3108

 
ADDITIONAL NOTES A pass in this study-unit is required before registering for ORC4130, ORC4140 and RDN4135.

Please note that a pass in each assessment component is obligatory for an overall pass mark to be awarded.

Attendance to scheduled sessions, inclusive of lectures/tutorials, practical, laboratory and clinical components is compulsory. Students who do not attend at least 90% of the scheduled sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below.

PCA 2- Periodontal Clinical Assessment 2 RSD
Involves Scaling and Root surface debridement of 1 quadrant on a patient with advanced periodontal disease.

The practical component will consist of the assessment of clinical steps associated with a removable prosthodontics case.
