DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces the students to Gerodontology. It will explore the changing demographics on a national and international level. The impact on their professions will be discussed. Social issues including active ageing, ageism, residential homes and institutions, and barrier to general and oral health and dental services will be discussed.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of the study-unit are to:

- Explore the complexity of ageing and current social ageing issues;
- Discuss oral health in the ageing mouth;
- Explore oral-health related quality of life in the older adult.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Recognize the principal demographical characteristics and trends in the aged population;
- Recognise the impact of socio-economic factors of the older adult with relevance to oral health care;
- Illustrate the principles and concepts of active ageing, elder abuse and ageism;
- Illustrate the sociological theories of ageing in relation to oral health care.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify the social, medical and oral health needs and demands of the older adult;
- Obtain a thorough general, medical and dental history from the older adult patient;
- Plan a treatment plan for the older adult;
- Provide treatment for the older adult;
- Identify the various barriers to health and how to mitigate them;
- Recognize the signs of dental abuse and neglect;
- Work within a multidisciplinary team.
