DESCRIPTION This study-unit embraces the concept of clinical governance which has become an integral part of continuous quality improvement agenda in health care. It ensures that clinical governance continues to be the central framework for assuring quality - minimizing risks, ensuring patient safety, ensuring ethical leadership and a coherent team approach, and ensuring public and professional confidence and experiences so that organizations and individuals play a major role and shoulder responsibility.

Thus the intention of this study-unit is to ensure that the concept of clinical governance is grasped and embedded within the MSc in Gerodontology programme and curriculum so that members of the oral health team will be able to identify organisational objectives and development plans together with raising of oral health awareness in an environment/residence for older adults. Students will be given the opportunity to have sound awareness of the key principles, components of clinical governance and its relevance to practice.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of the study-unit is to ensure that students have a sound awareness of the key principles, components of clinical governance and its relevance to practice. Therefore this study-unit aims at highlighting the responsibilities forming part of an individual's professional accountability in health care, especially in Oral Health Services. It also aims to embed the concept of ongoing and continuous improvement as an integral part of an individual's day to day practice.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Integrate and synthesise the wider societal, cultural political, professional, economical that may influence the utilisation of clinical governance both personally and within an organisation;
- Integrate clinical governance in leadership and ethics to help implement necessary change;
- Use clinical governance to enhance one's ethical and leadership skills.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Cognitive and Intellectual Skills:

- Understand the cultural issues relating to clinical governance;
- Integrate clinical governance in leadership and ethics to help implement necessary change.

- Autonomously interpret (student's) own learning requirements relating to their current level of knowledge and practice regarding clinical governance;
- Apply new knowledge and critically evaluate the effectiveness of this interpretation in one's practice at an individual, team and organisational level.

Key transferable skills:
- Communicate and disseminate complex clinical governance information to solve problems in practice;
- Use clinical governance to enhance one's ethical and leadership skills.
