DESCRIPTION | This study-unit introduces students to clinical work with diverse clients in a traditional dental clinical setting. Patients will include clients with a variety of limitations and impairments requiring prosthodontic, restorative and periodontics management. In Clinical Practice 1, students will organize and manage patients' treatment plans under supervision from dental and other allied health professionals, to foster multidisciplinary collaboration. Study-unit Aims: The aims of the study-unit are: - Developing an understanding of the role of the dental clinical professional in a clinical setting managing older adults; - Developing students' professionalism while providing realistic dental services for older adults; - Providing opportunities to integrate evidence-based dentistry in clinical settings; - Fostering the integration of knowledge and theory into dental practice. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Interpret patients' data to develop a dental care plan for older adults; - Provide dental services to patients in clinical settings according to the exigencies of the older adult patient; - Participate in the management of oral diseases; - Collaborate with other professionals in providing quality health care to older adults. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Collect data from medical and dental histories; - Liaise with other healthcare providers to optimize health for the older adult patient; - Administer comprehensive treatment care according to the patients' needs; - Promote oral health (practice placements) on a one is to one basis when treating patients; - Use evidence-based knowledge in decision-making. |
