DESCRIPTION | Biomarkers are extensively used to classify patients into prognostic subgroups, potential therapeutic groups and provide knowledge on resistance to therapy. This study-unit will utilize case studies to provide students with a detailed understanding of the use of molecular medicine to derive information on personalised interventions. Selected papers shall be presented by the candidates utilizing the principles and laboratory techniques discussed in PAT5400. The papers shall mainly cover research in Surgery. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit’s aim is to provide the candidates with guidelines and protocols utilising evidence-based molecular-guided decisions required to ensure proper medical and surgical interventions. The study-unit also aims to provide a detailed account of molecular medicine using current case studies and discuss future strategies. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be: - proficient in constructive criticism of published papers; - able to demonstrate a sound knowledge of the use of biomarkers for guided therapy; - able to discuss case studies that translate scientific research to the clinic. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - apply basic principles to current case studies; - gain current diagnostic information; - use tools to classify patients into therapeutic groups; - discuss published papers; and - provide critical overviews of research projects and publications. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: Grech G and Grossman I Preventive and Predictive Genetics: Towards Personalised Medicine. Springer. 2015. Review papers, case studies and research papers shall be provided during the course of the study-unit. |
