DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will review the principles of blood storage, collection design packs, and preparation of various components. The Principles involved in inactivation of pathogens in blood products will be addressed. In addition, special techniques in the blood donation area such as apheresis will be discussed. This study-unit will give an overview of the organizational and functional set up of the National Blood Transfusion Services (NBTS). This will include: 1. Screening of blood donors ; donor selection criteria; donor recruitment and donor counseling. 2. The process of donor bleeding and traceability with particular attention to the use of the IT system in the blood donation process. 3. Quality Assurance and Quality Control comprising document control, the principles of Good Manufacturing Practices, validations, and risk assessments. 4. Traceability of blood components and products from donors to recipients. The use of Bar code labels and IT in ensuring safe release of products. 5. Issues in the management of the National Blood Transfusion Service including the formulation of policies, business plans, and other managerial responsibilities. 6. The EU blood Directive. The formulation of operating procedures. Learning Objectives: The student is expected to: 1. acquire knowledge of communicable diseases relevant to transfusion and interpret test results and the significance of initial, repeat, reactive and confirmed results. 2. have a good understanding of Blood screening and serology techniques including essentials of Blood group, Leucocyte and Platelet serology 3. be fully aware of the quality system and quality standards relevant to the NBTS and to the EU directive. 4. participate in clinically related audits, and look backs. 5. able to participate in the generation of SOP’s especially related to the donation area and in initiatives related to haemovigilance. 6. select donors for apheresis, participate in the formulation of relevant SOP’s and perform apheresis including kit installation. The student should be fully aware of all possible risks and complications. 7. be fully aware of the duties and the work in these sections. Objective data analysis is required. At the end of this study-unit the students will be expected to have acquired the basic skills required to effectively participate in management of the centre and contribute to decision-making. with potential clinical significance.
