DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will focus on an analysis of the regulations contained in the EU Equality Acquis, Equality and non discrimination under the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, the United Nations Convention for the protection of persons with disability, the Istanbul Convention and other international, regional and national legislation protecting vulnerable groups from discrimination. Study-Unit Aims: To analyse the concepts of equality and non-discrimination as developed in international conventions for vulnerable groups, the interpretation and application of these concepts by different courts and tribunals and to consider how these international and regional treaties have affected national legislation. This study-unit will further consider the effectiveness or otherwise of equality bodies in Malta. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Analyse the concepts of equality and non-discrimination; - Identify and apply these concepts in different sectors of applicaiton such as employment and access to services; - Identify and analyse relevant caselaw and consider the principles developed by courts and tribunals in this field. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Provide a written analysis of the different application of the rules on equality and non-discrimination as applicable to different vulnerable groups and within different fields.
