DESCRIPTION The study-unit will consider three aspects of criminal justice. One aspect will focus on International Criminal Law and Human Rights and will analyse the recognition and application of human rights in the prosecution of international crimes, the redress of human rights violations committed by international crimes, and international organised crime. The second aspect will consider individual human rights within national criminal justice systems including an analysis of the right to liberty and security and the right to a fair trial.

This aspect will also focus on the rights of prisoners. The third aspect will consider procedures in national criminal law which implement human rights.

Study-Unit Aims:

To analyse the protection, interpretation and application of human rights within national criminal justice systems as well as in International Criminal Law.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Analyse the protection, interpretation and application of individual human rights within national criminal justice systems;
- Analyse treaties of International Criminal Law and understand their remit of application;
- Identify and analyse relevant caselaw and consider the principles developed by courts and tribunals in this field.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Provide a written analysis of the different application of individual human rights within criminal justice systems.
