TITLE Advances in Medical Research Skills Seminars

DESCRIPTION This study-unit will consist of a series of seminars and workshops. This unit shall have three parts:

1. Students are expected to participate in the workshops analysing, dissecting, discussing and critically assessing papers of relevance to Medical Biochemistry selected by the lecturers.
2. Students shall prepare a critical review in relation to the topic of their dissertation or of a topic of their choice from a list prepared by the lecturers. They shall then be expected to give a seminar presentation on the topic background.
3. Students shall prepare a critical review of the methodology and results of their dissertation. They shall then be invited to give a seminar presentation on their research methodology and results .

Seminar presentations, critiques and reviews shall be judged by at least two members of the Board of Studies. Marks will be awarded on the clarity and understanding of the work presented. Students should address why experiments were carried out and suggest possible future experimental designs using the relevant results presented.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of the seminars are for students to come together as a community of learners to discuss scientific research papers, prepare their research methodologies and be able to offer useful constructive criticism and discuss possible difficulties they might encounter in their field of research.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Assess the consistency of various research papers;
- Evaluate the various research methodologies in the field of medical biochemistry;
- Offer constructive criticism in a teamwork environment.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Write a review on a scientific topic;
- Design appropriate research processes and the required statistical analysis;
- Present their ideas and research aims;
- Use appropriate presentation techniques.
