DESCRIPTION This study-unit focuses on the areas: The child, the learning Process, the Mini Game Philosophy, Issues in self confidence and self esteem, safety first, practical coaching and issues in risk management. Students are required to carry out work in groups/pairs and follow a number of workshops throughout the sessions. Students will also take part in a group workshop focusing on the LTAD programme.

Study Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims at:
• Engaging students in discussion and reflection about the learning process and how young athletes learn skills;
• Providing discussion on real life experiences in coaching sport, the challenges in skill learning and progression;
• Exposing students to Long Term Athletic Development and it’s foundation and framework;
• Providing the frameworks associated to the concepts of self-esteem and self confidence;
• Engaging students in running risk management activities.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the study unit students will be able to:

• Design activities and sessions for young athletes aligned with their physiological, psychological and sociological development;
• Apply in practice risk management protocols;
• Apply in practice practical pedagogical concepts which align with the cognitive development of children.

2. Skills
By the end of the study unit students will be able to:

• Reflect on how young athletes learn skills and ways how to implement theory in practice;
• Plan progressive coaching sessions aligned with LTAD principles;
• Reflect on how coach/athlete interactions impinge on development of self-confidence and self-esteem;
• Critically reflect on the concepts of safe practices.
