DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is designed to teach the theory and practice of the basic first aid skills necessary for many emergencies starting with the Priorities of First Aid, Managing an incident and the Roles and Responsibilities of the first aider. The study-unit covers how to take care of an unconscious casualty, and how to administer first aid. Topics include: - Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation; - Disorders of the airway; - Dealing with bleeding and shock; - Causes of unconsciousness; - Burns & scalds; - Injuries to bones, muscles & joints; - Poisoning; - Recognition and management of major illnesses; - Recognition of minor illnesses and appropriate action; - Eye injuries; - Miscellaneous injuries; - Infection control; - Communication and delegation in an emergency; - Manage the transportation of a casualty. Study-Unit Aims: The study-unit incorporates both practical and interactive learning aimed at giving participants the confidence and ability to put the theory into practice and to cope with real-life situations in the future. Students will be awarded a certificate which is valid for a period of three years. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify different symptoms for various injuries; - Recognise and treat someone who is sick or has been injured; - Acquire knowledge about how to contact emergency services; - Acquire knowledge about the responsibilities of a first aider. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Assess and manage a casualty and an incident; - Administer first aid to a casualty; - Report an accident to the emergency services. ADDITIONAL NOTES | A registration fee of €50 is due for this study-unit. Students are to pay the fee at the Maltapost branch Msida Campus, in the Administration Building and are to send a scanned copy of the receipt to ipes@um.edu.mt. After registration and payment, students are to book their sessions directly with the First Aid service provider. Occ. A - Available for students registered with St John's Ambulance Brigade Occ. B - Available for students registered with Malta Red Cross Society Occ. C - Available for students registered with Emergency Rescue Corps. This course is also held in Gozo Occ. D - Available for students registered with St Bernard's First Aid and Safety Training Institute Occ. E - Available for students registered with First Responder Centre Malta Please note that a pass in each assessment component is obligatory for an overall pass mark to be awarded. |
