MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Institute for Physical Education and Sport

DESCRIPTION This third study-unit will continue to build on the previous 2 units on exercise physiology. It will deal with the phsiological changes that take place when exercising in different ambient conditions and also the different physiological processes in special populations. Topics include:

- Exercise and persons suffering from Chronic Diseases, in particular, Asthma,Diabetes, Epilepsy;
- Cardiovascular diseases and the role of exercise, in particular, Hypertension,Coronary Artery Disease, Stroke;
- The young Athlete;
- The Female Athlete;
- Exercise and Ageing;
- Human performance in conditions of environmental heat and cold; and altitude;
- The effects of dehydration on performance;
- The concept of Fair Play, Level Playing Ground and Values of Sport.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to equip the students with knowledge on how physiology of the human body changes acoording to age and gender, and under diverse environmental conditions. Concept of Fair Play and Doping in Sport will be explored.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will:
- Be able to answer questions on the changed physiology according to age and gender;
- Be able to demonstrate and understanding of the priciples of using altitude to enhance performance;
- Become familiar with priciples of fair play and consequences of doping.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Adapt exercise and training programmes in different populations and under adverse environmental conditions;
- Consider the benefits of altitude training to enhaNce performance.
