DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is designed to give students an overview of the course and prepare them for the final examinations. The seminars are conducted by two or more members of the Department. Description This study-unit provides students with the opportunity for guided synoptic study, leading to a three-hour exam. It focuses on two main areas of study, namely ethics and politics Study-unit Aims: - To introduce students to the expectations and demands of synoptic study; - To provide students with guidance and opportunities for discussion of synoptic approaches to the philosophical analysis of issues in ethics and politics - To gently prepare students for the kind of thinking required for postgraduate study; Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Compare different ethical and political positions and justify them; - Approach ethics and politics as a way of broadening their understanding of the world they live in; - Critique and evaluate different theoretical positions in ethics and politics; 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Formulate well-reasoned arguments in ethics and politics - Break down complex philosophical ideas into their constituent parts and reconstruct them holistically; - Write synoptically, critically and analytically in ethics and politics Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: In view of the synoptic nature of this study-unit, main texts are not being indicated here, but comprehensive reading lists will be circulated at the start of each academic year. |
