DESCRIPTION | The dissertation involves conducting in-depth research on a topic of the student's choice and subject to the availability of supervision. Study-unit Aims: The aim of the dissertation is to train students to conduct research at a more advanced level. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. demonstrate knowledge of the questions which form the subject matter of the dissertation; 2. analyze or critique the subject matter through both primary and secondary sources; 3. synthesize and integrate the analysis of these sources and the philosophical positions they express; 4. justify the importance of the theme within the tradition of philosophy. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. identify and formulate a hypothesis concerning a philosophical question; 2. review the literature in order to find a way of providing an answer to this question; 3. communicate the research on this question in a logically coherent manner; 4. demonstrate the capacity for self-directed problem-solving, independent working and autonomous time-management. |
