TITLE Social Aspects of Pharmacy and Terminology

DESCRIPTION The social aspects of pharmacy as a profession are put forward. Concepts of professional responsibilities, professional activities are introduced. The evolvement of professional pharmacy services locally, in Europe and in other countries is described. The professional relationships with stakeholders including consumers, patients and other healthcare professionals are portayed.

The legal framework in the delivery of pharmaceutical services is explored.

Students are introduced to medical terms associated with diagnosis and management of disease states affecting different body systems (Cardiovascular, Respiratory, Gastrointestinal, Hepatobiliary, Nephrology, Hemaetology, Endocrinology Musculoskeletal,Neurology, Infectious diseases and centralnervous system)

Practical Sessions at Clinical Sessions are carried out to expose the student to the clinical scenario, interact with patients and use patient case notes.

Study-unit Aims:

- To introduce principles of social pharmacy;
- To expose students to issues on the use of medicine in society;
- To provide socio-legal aspects in the practice of Pharmacy;
- To introduce students to patient care;
- To provide students with Knowledge of Basic medical terminology;
- To introduce students to patient interface and patient care systems in a hospital environment.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Describe the concept of social pharmacy and its impact on the practice of Pharmacy;
- List legal frame for local practice;
- Appreciate roles and expertise of associate discipline;
- Define basic medical terms used in patient care documentation;
- Describe characteristic of common conditions.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Appraise aspects of Pharmacy Practice using a sociological approach;
- Reflect on practice of Pharmacy and Propose service developments;
- Work effectively in a team using team interaction skills;
- Follow patient care documentation;
- Communication with patients and other healthcare professionals;
- Use medical terms associated with body systems;
- Interpret diagnostic and symptomatic medical;
- Interpret abbreviations used in case notes.
