DESCRIPTION Students are required to attend for practice at a community/hospital pharmacy for a period of 6 months. Students have to attend during all opening hours of the pharmacy with a half day session exemption per week. The students will be under the supervision of a pharmacist and will participate in weekly discussions with a pharmacist tutor. Details are provided in the In-Service Training Handbook.

Study-unit Aims:

o to provide a longitudinal learning experience in direct patient care;

o to provide a structured practice-oriented approach to pharmacy practice. Students are exposed to practical experience in a community or hospital setting to appreciate professional aspects, the legal framework governing the supply and use of medicines, the use of medicines in society, the public health role of the pharmacist in the community and the ethical standards that the practice of pharmacy demands.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of this study unit, the student will be able to:

o describe components of pharmacy operations including risk management strategies;
o manage medication distribution and inventory control.

2. Skills
By the end of this study unit, the student will be able to:

o apply problem-solving strategies in pharmacy;
o develop and maintain documentation systems in pharmacy;
o plan and perform patient evaluation to identify possible/risk for drug-related and non-drug related problems;
o manage human and fiscal resources;
o promote health, wellness and disease prevention.
