Study-Unit Description

CODE PHT1075

TITLE The Integumentary System and Massage in Physiotherapy

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Physiotherapy

DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces students to the fundamental skills of soft tissue manipulations and massage, and to the complex human integumentary system particularly relevant for physiotherapists. The study-unit will involve linking theoretical knowledge with direct practical applications addressed in modern clinical areas, ranging from sport and relaxation to oncology and vascular problems. The study-unit will contain lectures and supervised practical sessions over one year to allow for the development of informed skills. Students will have the opportunity to learn new physiotherapeutic techniques by practising on each other.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit addresses a fundamental element of physiotherapy: the skin, its use, its treatment and its role as a medium for physiotherapy treatment. It aims to prepare students for the several types of physiotherapy techniques that they will cover in the degree programme and it aims to give an overview of the effect of pathologies that involve the skin on the choice of physiotherapy treatment. It will involve practice time in the lab to develop practice competencies in soft tissue manipulation.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe the pathological changes which occur during dermatological conditions;
- Describe the definitions and types of skin lesions;
- Describe the effects of burns on the integumentary system;
- Describe the common congenital deformities which require surgical intervention;
- Discuss the medical, surgical and physiotherapeutic management of patients suffering from disease, deformity or burns of the integumentary system;
- Discuss the psychological aspects of patients suffering from dermatological conditions, congenital deformities and burns;
- Describe the effects of massage and soft tissue manipulation on the various physiological systems of the human body; and
- Mention the contraindications to the use of massage and soft tissue manipulation.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate various hands-on techniques within the sphere of massage and soft tissue manipulation with the aim of improving health and preventing the onset of disease;
- Demonstrate knowledge of anatomy and physiology and basic pathology of disease on the choice of technique and on the performance of the techniques;
- Demonstrate the assessment of the patient for suitability for soft tissue manipulation and other physiotherapeutic interventions effecting the integumentary system.
