DESCRIPTION This study-unit covers basic management concepts; professional leadership; interprofessional practice; methods of evaluation of physiotherapy practice; social policy and legal issues relevant to the physiotherapist. It also provides an introduction to healthcare systems and the organisation of physiotherapy services in various countries.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to assist in the turn out of graduate physiotherapists who are equipped with the skills, knowledge and competencies which are necessary for them to be able to funtion effectively in the complex changing environment of the workplace and the healthcare sector.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Be competent to demonstrate the leadership and management skills necessary to practice physiotherapy safely and efficiently.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Apply management skills in physiotherapy practice;
- Manage time and resources effectively to ensure efficient physiotherapy practice;
- Demonstrate effective communication and inter-personal skills;
- Understand the roles of other health care professionals and ensure interprofessional working;
- Make independent informed decisions with appropriate justification;
- Evaluate the effectiveness of physiotherapy intervention;
- Demonstrate appropriate professional behaviour giving credit to the profession;
- Ensure maintenance of physiotherapy standards;
- Contribute effectively to the planning of physiotherapy services and resources.
