Study-Unit Description

CODE PHT3108

TITLE Cardiopulmonary Physiotherapy 2

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Physiotherapy

DESCRIPTION This study-unit will consist of lectures, workshops, case study presentations and practicals. The student will have the opportunity to analyse pre-prepared patient case studies, work in groups, visit clinical areas, hold discussions, use outcome measures and tests. Lectures would address the advanced knowledge building on Cardiopulmonary Physiotherapy 1. Case presentation and workshops would address clinical reasoning and the use of evidence-based treatment approaches. These would be continuously supported by lecturer-led practicum. The assessment methods would be inter-linked so that learning is consolidated by the end of the study-unit.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit builds on the competencies reached through 'Cardiopulmonary Physiotherapy 1' to permit the student to analyse complex cases in patients with cardiopulmonary disorders and construct treatment programmes and monitoring strategies.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Apply biomedical and behavioural scientific knowledge to the physiotherapy evaluation and management of complex pulmonary and cardiovascular disorders;
- Apply clinical reasoning skills and an evidence-based approach to decision making in cardiopulmonary physiotherapy practice;
- Describe the physiology of exercise;
- Associate the benefits of exercise training with wellbeing in people with cardiovascular and pulmonary problems;
- Criticise the evidence base of physiotherapy management of complex cardiopulmonary conditions, including lung transplantation;
- Demonstrate an awareness of the physiotherapist's role in promoting wellness as relevant to the pulmonary, cardiac and vascular systems; and
- Analyse cardiovascular and pulmonary disorders in populations as a public health issue.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Conduct a complete physiotherapy examination of a patient with problems of the cardiopulmonary system;
- Justify outcome measures used in the physiotherapy management of complex cardiopulmonary disorders and analyse findings;
- Differentiate between presenting and arising symptoms enabling the construction of sensitive interventions;
- Manipulate information from case studies to extract detail for the role of physiotherapy interventions for people suffering from cardiopulmonary disorders;
- Construct sensitive exercise programmes aimed at decreasing the affects of cardiopulmonary disorders; and
- Effectively work with others in developing and giving an oral presentation for peer review.
