DESCRIPTION Physiotherapy is a profession requiring a wide breadth of knowledge and the application of evidence to treatment techniques, patient examination and evaluation in clinical situations. The framework within which this study-unit is set up includes discussion of the application of different aspects of physiotherapy to patient care and analysis of some practical applications in various case scenarios, all based on clinical knowledge, available evidence and patient preferences. Case scenarios include areas in musculoskeletal, cardiorespiratory, neurology, physiotherapy in children and physiotherapy for older adults.

Study-unit Aims:

To enable the student to apply the fundamental concepts of physiotherapy to clinical situations.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Integrate all the student has learnt in musculoskeletal, cardiorespiratory, neurology, paediatrics and geriatrics to the assessment, physiotherapy diagnosis and management of patients within clinical settings;
- Explain the process of assessment of patients with movement problems caused by impairments of body systems and resultant disabilities;
- Discuss evidence-based physiotherapy management of patients with movement problems caused by impairments of body systems and resultant disabilities.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate safe and effective reasoning in constructing physiotherapy management plans for given patient case scenarios;
- Demonstrate different ways of addressing clinical challenges related to specific needs of the patient;
- Use the discussions and workshops carried out within this study-unit as a source of knowledge and experience that can applied in a variety of ways with similar or different patient groups.
