DESCRIPTION This study-unit comprises a clinical block of normally two clinical areas with a total of 260 hours of supervised clinical practice, which must be achieved by the end of the study-unit. Students are supervised by qualified physiotherapists in the clinical area allotted to the physiotherapists. Students and clinical supervisors will use written guidelines provided by the Department to guide the learning process. The student will be assessed throughout the placement. The student is responsible for keeping accurate attendance sheets to document the required number of hours as well as submitting them to the Clinical Coordinator’s office by the stipulated deadline.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to introduce the physiotherapy student into clinical practice as a beginner performer as part of their development into novice physiotherapists under the supervision of a clinical supervisor and an academic mentor. It gives the student the opportunity to practise the skills they would have learned in the labs and communicate effectively with the patient and the members of the interdisciplinary team. The student will observe and practise the specific performance indicators and subsequently demonstrate safe practice at the required level of competence, as specified in the Clinical Competences Portfolio.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Discuss the conditions that a patient/client presents with in the student clinical area;
- Describe the physical limitations that arise from these conditions;
- Explain the psychosocial implications of the functional limitations or disability;
- Provide, via narration, an accurate account of the patient's clinical history;
- Discuss the role of the multidisciplinary team in the student's clinical placement;
- Explain the role of the physiotherapist in the student's clinical placement area; and
- Discuss the concept of patient safety in physiotherapy.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Perform multiple procedures under close supervision that may be implemented to test for the conditions that caused impairment or disability;
- Perform multiple procedures that may be implemented in the intervention to reduce the disability;
- Summarise findings from a patient medical file;
- Write an effective Subjective and Objective Assessment of a patient;
- Write an Analysis of the patient's condition;
- Construct a plan of treatment/management; and
- Correctly apply basic theoretical knowledge to practice, according to the specific clinical setting.
