Study-Unit Description

CODE PHY1030

TITLE Basic Concepts in Physics 2

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 2

DEPARTMENT Physics

DESCRIPTION Contents:

A basic study-unit for non-physics students assuming no prior knowledge ofphysics (basic science and mathematics are required) that covers waves,electromagnetism and quantum theory without going into mathematical detail.

- Waves:
Wave equation; propagation of waves; polarisation; sound and light;reflection and refraction; interference and
diffraction
- Electromagnetism:
Electric charge (flux, field and potential); magnetic fields (generator anddynamo effects); electromagnetic
waves; current electricity (Ohm's and Kirchoff's laws)
- Quantum mechanics:
Historical note (why quantum mechanics is "necessary"); wave-particleduality (uncertainty principle);
particle-in-a-box (confinement and tunelling); applications (Bohr's modelof the atom, photoelectric
effect); non-locality (Aspect experiment and quantum entanglement)
