DESCRIPTION | Contents: A basic study-unit for non-physics students assuming no prior knowledge ofphysics (basic science and mathematics are required) that covers waves, electromagnetism and quantum theory without going into mathematical detail. - Waves: Wave equation; propagation of waves; polarisation; sound and light;reflection and refraction; interference and diffraction - Electromagnetism: Electric charge (flux, field and potential); magnetic fields (generator anddynamo effects); electromagnetic waves; current electricity (Ohm's and Kirchoff's laws) - Quantum mechanics: Historical note (why quantum mechanics is "necessary"); wave-particleduality (uncertainty principle); particle-in-a-box (confinement and tunelling); applications (Bohr's modelof the atom, photoelectric effect); non-locality (Aspect experiment and quantum entanglement) Recommended Texts: - V P Colletta, College Physics, Mosby - H Benson, University Physics, John Wiley & Sons - R Feynman, The Feynman Lectures in Physics Vol. 1, Addison-Wesley - J Gribben, In Search of Schrodinger's Cat Quantum Physics and Reality,Corgi Books - J Gribben, Schrodinger's Kitting, Corgi Books |
