TITLE Pastoral Care in Context

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 10

DEPARTMENT Pastoral Theology, Liturgy and Canon Law

DESCRIPTION This study-unit explores the basic attitudes linked to pastoral care in the context of the ministerial nature of the Church. Alongside the presentation of images that inform pastoral care, it proposes a framework for supporting the pastoral care giver. This includes working in a team and appreciation of gender differences. Furthermore, this study-unit will explore how pastoral care found concrete expression in specific historical circumstances through a critical analysis of diakonia in Scripture and the theme of foreigner in the Fathers of the Church. Lastly it focuses on specific contemporary areas of pastoral care which present particular challenges to the caring community and to the pastor. Participants will be offered an opportunity to explore appropriate pastoral responses in different situations.
