DESCRIPTION | The study-unit studies the theological and liturgical principles in order to enable the participant to prepare the liturgical celebrations of Sunday, the liturgical seasons and feasts in the parishes where they might minister. It tries to help the students incorporate the spirit of the liturgy into their personal prayer and into the life of the communities. Various elements of the liturgy are studied in order to helps students be liturgical leaders in the pastoral life of the Church. Moreover, this study-unit also involves a practical aspect: the students are formed to become good preachers. Hence, attention is given to the essential and creative elements in the development of sermons. This includes all aspects of preparation, the consideration of the different audiences and circumstances in life, the composition of each part of the message and finally also train students in analysing their own sermons and those of others. Study-unit Aims: - To enable students to acquire the theoretical and practical skills in the areas of preaching; - To familiarise students with the Roman Calendar, Sacramentary and Lectionary, Sacramental Rites and other Church documents; provide the necessary background to intelligently plan and prepare fruitful celebrations of Sunday, the liturgical seasons and feasts in the parishes where they might minister. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. analyse the Roman Calendar, Sacramentary and Lectionary, Sacramental Rites and other Church documents; 2. discuss and evaluate the main stages of their development towards a holistic appreciation and experience of the liturgy; 3. demonstrate and assess understanding of the liturgical and pastoral contexts of preaching; 4. evaluate the hermeneutical principles of language in the context of preaching. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. plan and implement fruitful celebrations of Sunday, the liturgical seasons and feasts in the parishes where he might minister, 2. examine biblical texts appropriately for preaching; evaluate the different approaches to preaching; and evaluate preaching form and content, 3. self-examine and critically appraisal one's homilies and public-speaking capablity, 4. analyse homilies and/or speeches given by others and train members of the community to speak in public.
