DESCRIPTION This study-unit focuses on the fundamentals of Pastoral Theology. It provides an outline of the historical development of Pastoral Theology as a specific discipline in Theology. Furthermore this is complemented with the contemporary understanding of Pastoral Theology together with challenges involved in pastoral practice today. Ecclesial discernment lies at the core of pastoral theology and practice. Hence, the basic elements and dimensions of discernment are studied together with the way forward in order to prepare and implement a pastoral plan in the ecclesial context.

Study-unit Aims:

1. To explain the development that took place over the years in the understanding of Pastoral Theology as a specific discipline within Theology;
2. To present the method of Pastoral Theology, with its different stages which have ecclesial discernment as the focal point;
3. To identify the main dimensions of Pastoral Theology and enable students to understand the link of Pastoral Theology with pastoral planning.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- demonstrate a critical understanding of the development of Pastoral Theology;
- explain the process of ecclesial discernment linked to the method of Pastoral Theology;
- distinguish the main dimensions of Pastoral Theology.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- develop a pastoral method which is useful in ministry;
- design the process of pastoral planning in specific contexts;
- communicate effectively the basics of Pastoral Theology to non specialists.
