DESCRIPTION This unit offers students academic and theoretical insight into conflict resolution, communication and reconciliation skills. It offers also practical skills through workshops. This unit covers such topics as conflict and peace, transitional justice, dynamics of reconciliation, contemporary conflict and peacemaking, the correct use of communication and its varied branches, and mediation and conflict analysis skills. Students in this program develop a range of alternative dispute resolution, conflict analysis and conflict communication skills.

Study-unit Aims:

1. To enable student to apply appropriate communication theory skills and dynamics to various conflict management styles;
2. To provide students with an opportunity to learn and apply good communication skills, relevant in different cultural settings;
3. To define and analyse the key practical and theoretical concerns of managing and resolving conflicts.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. To discuss Conflict Communication theories;
2. To analyse the complex interplay between communication and conflict;
3. To investigate thoroughly how understanding is the cardinal goal of communication;
4. To discuss the legal and professional ethics in the practice of delivering services to de-escalate conflict;
5. To understand some inherent limitations of communication as peacemaker.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Resolve differences within workplaces, communities, and families by utilizing interest-based conflict resolution skills and techniques;
2. Engage in reflective practice to build skill and professional competency;
3. Collaborate with colleagues, clients, and other stakeholders to enhance professional working relationships.
