DESCRIPTION The inputs during this study-unit are structured to show that the major theories of management and organization behavior when properly applied can be a major help to Church organizations in terms of effectiveness and quality of service.

Sample of the Topics to be Discussed:

The Person of the Leader;
Leadership for the Church’s Future;
Characteristics of Best Leaders;
Cooperative Relationships;
Participative Management;
Obedience–Other side of the coin;
Dimensions of Obedience.

Study-unit Aims:

The participants will hopefully understand what makes for effective organizations and become more aware of the nature of the Churches as voluntary organizations and how they are subject to the same forces inherent within all organizations. By the end of the study-unit, students should be in a position to acknowledge the common factors that forge the person and the dynamics of leadership as seen in the world of management and at the same time appreciate the singularity and identity of leadership in the Church, modeled on the person of Christ and imbued by his spirit and attitudes.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

• Understand more clearly the dynamics of interpersonal and organizational behavior;
• Clarify one’s mission and develop strategies for effective action in building the Christian community and furthering the mission of Christ.

In this they will be guided by the professionalism that the world of leadership and management offers, but at the same time be able to integrate it with their mission to respect the corporate values of the institution they represent.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

• Be equipped to analyze the causes of dysfunction within organizations and ways of managing change in an effective and collaborative way;
• Be capable of analyzing tasks and functions of the group within the context of the wider organization;
• Learn ways of being present to others and working with them in ways that enhance the potential in the service of the organization.
