DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces the student to professional preclinical studies. The students are introduced to the concepts and principles which underpin podiatric practice and the delivery of professional health care services. Topics include structure of the health care system, infection control, medical ethics, record keeping, multi-disciplinary team management and communication skills. Preliminary cutaneous science and topical therapeutic techniques and practice and procedures in the approach to case management, will be introduced. Through these studies students will understand and appreciate the podiatry profession and their own professional development.

Objectives:

At the end of the study unit, students should be able to:

- Develop an understanding and awareness of the concepts and principles which underpin podiatric clinical practice and the delivery of professional health care.
- Describe the role of allied health professionals and appreciate the concept of multidisciplinary care.
- Describe categories of medical information and adhere to the legal/ethical issues regarding record keeping.
- Discuss the theory of clinical decision making in the management of medical disorders.
- Describe various methods of sterilization/disinfection and identify various other methods of infection control.
- Describe the foundations of good communication between practitioner and patient and give examples of barriers and aids to good communication.
- Recognise the most commonly used podiatric instruments and describe their use.

- Patient confidentiality and medical record keeping
- Ethics and bioethics
- Infection control in the health care setting
- Multi-disciplinary care
- Instrument cleaning and sterilization
- Commonly used podiatric instruments
- Debridement and enucleation techniques
