DESCRIPTION In this subject students will begin to treat patients, consolidate their skills learned in the first year and develop professional clinical competencies. Practical application is made of knowledge gained from subject matter covered in podiatric assessment and management, biomechanics, anatomy, and physiology.

Objectives:

At the end of the study unit, students will be able to:

- Develop current and comprehensive knowledge of the podiatric skills
- Undertake a generic assessment of the patient's medical history and presenting complaint.
- Undertake a basic examination of the presenting foot complaint.
- Undertake basic podiatric assessment procedures of the lower limb, including vascular, neurological and musculoskeletal assessments.
- Provide diagnosis and differential diagnosis of common conditions affecting the lower limb.
- Provide a podiatric treatment plan and review.
- Provide basic clinical application and mechanical care for common foot problems.
- Demonstrate safety and competence in performing the podiatry skills under supervision
- Communicate effectively with patients, tutors and peers

Content:

These credits are covered by clinical placements. During these placements students should observe the qualified staff and assist to provide podiatric care. The students should be able to carry out a number of clinical skills under the supervision of a member of the qualified staff. They should start recognising the importance of the application of theoretical knowledge to clinical practice.
