DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will be composed of two parts. The first part of the study-unit will cover the Ethical and Legal Background including: 1. Scientific reasoning in podiatry, 2. Ethical reasoning in podiatry, 3. Tools in ethical reasoning. Ethical theories such as Consequentialism, Duty Based Theories, Virtue ethics, Communitarianism and Feminist ethics will be covered in this study-unit. Core principles such as human dignity, vulnerability, human rights, justice and beneficence will also be discussed. The introduction to the European Courts and Human Rights Act together with other relevant laws will be discussed. The Podiatry Code of Ethics and the podiatrist-patient relationship will also be discussed. The second part of the study-unit will concentrate on the concepts of Informed Consent, the Law of Consent, Confidentiality, Conflict of Interest and the missing accountability which can arise during a podiatric consultation. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims to equip students with the necessary knowledge with regards to ethical and legal issues required during a podiatric consultation. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate knowledge of ethical background related to the podiatric profession; - Recognize the legal background related to the podiatric profession; - Appreciate the importance of Confidentiality during a podiatric consultation; and - Explore the importance of any conflict of interest that could arise during a podiatric consultation. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Relate the ethical reasoning to their every day clinical practice; - Develop the required skills related to podiatrist-patient relationship; - Deal with any conflict of interests during podiatric consultations; and - Observe and apply European Laws in their everyday practice.
