DESCRIPTION This study-unit provides students with:

- The basic knowledge and understanding of the various physiotherapeutic modalities that can be applied to podiatry.
- An introduction to a wide range of diagnostic and physical treatment modalities used in podiatric practice.

This study-unit includes a section on mechanics and the kinesiology of gait. The contra-indications and limitations of each modality are also discussed.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to provide Podiatry students with a basic understanding in a wide range of diagnostic and physical treatment modalities used in podiatric practice.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Gain an understanding in the applications of physical therapy in foot pathologies;
- Show an understanding of the importance/benefits of treating foot pathologies by physical and mechanical means;
- Gain an understanding of the contra-indications and limitations of physical therapy in certain foot pathologies;
- Show an understanding of the importance of any health/safety issues applicable to physical therapy;
- Identify the mechanics of injury that are involved in gait.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Perform a basic assessment of the foot and demonstrate the physiotherapeutic modality to treat the condition;
- Recognise any contra-indications to the physiotherapeutic modalities chosen;
- Apply the appropriate precautions prior to treating the foot condition with physiotherapeutic modalities;
- Identify and critically discuss recent research studies in physical therapies with particular attention given to treatments related to the foot.
