CODE POD3020

TITLE Practical Podiatric Anaesthesia

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Podiatry

DESCRIPTION This study-unit will help students to develop an understanding of the clinical use and administration of local anaesthetics and the recognition and treatment of adverse drug reactions associated with the use of local anaesthetics.

The following topics will be discussed:

- Classification of local anaesthetics;
- Patient assessment prior to the administration of local anaesthesia;
- Review of clinical administration protocols;
- Side effects, adverse drug reactions and clinical emergencies associated with the administration of local anaesthesia;
- Different anaesthetic techniques related to podiatric practice; and
- Techniques of administration such as local infiltration and digital nerve blocks.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to provide students with specific knowledge and skill of the practical aspect of administering local anaesthetic to patients prior to podiatric surgery. This study-unit will seek to consider pertinent pharmacology, demonstrate the podiatric methodology of calculating the maximum safe dose and review the technique of administering digital anaesthesia prior to foot surgery.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe the process of administration of local anaesthetics;
- Recognize the indications and contra-indications when local anesthesia is to be administered;
- Establish management protocols for complications associated with administration of local anaesthesia;
- Demonstrate a general understanding and appreciation of the different techniques of administration of local anaesthesia;
- Demonstrate ability of the use of different administration techniques of local anaesthesia;
- Discuss the importance of health/safety issues applicable to local anaesthesia; and
- Recognize clinical emergencies.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate the appropriate methodological approach required when administering LA;
- Evaluate patient medical history and suitability prior to administration of LA;
- Identify the appropriate equipment and selection of LA drug prior to administration;
- Calculate the maximum safe dose of local anaesthetics required for specific patients prior to administration; and
- Perform administration of local anaesthetics.
