DESCRIPTION | The study-unit will cover issues related to both the public sector management, and the management of a private practice. The aim of the unit is to introduce the student to a wide range of topics, including an overview of the private and public health system, developing a business plan, different business structures, financial management, managing staff and occupational health and safety issues. Topics covered in this study-unit will also include organisational behaviour, appropriate use of resources and clinical audits. Study-unit Aims: This unit is aimed to introduce the student to the management issues in establishing and working in a clinical practice. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Understand the concept of activity based costing; - Understand the concept of evaluating the effectiveness and efficiency of a service; - Understand the concept of unit budgeting and the appropriate use of resources; - Explore the general characteristics of change; - Examine the desirable qualities of an effective change agent; - Analyse the concept of quality assurance, standard setting and risk management in podiatry; - Consider means of effective staff development; - Address issues related to staffing and scheduling; - Consider professional, legal and disciplinary issues in podiatry; - Examine effective communication processes and team building; and - Identify and critically discuss recent research studies in management. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Highlight appropriate skills in problems solving and decision making; - Analyse strategies to facilitate effective stress and time management; - Analyse different patterns of patient care delivery; and - Identify and critically discuss recent research studies in management.
