DESCRIPTION | This unit is set to help students understand holistic economic, political and social scenarios by focusing on official statistics published by Maltese, European and international research agencies. In particular, it brings to the fore the concept of Evidence-Based Policy which is the outcome of scientific research, both qualitative as well as quantitative. Students are orientated to various statistical and narrative reports in order to enhance their capacity to read, understand and interpret data with the aim of serving as an impetus for policy action or reform within the public administration. To this effect, the unit emphasizes socio-economic and political as well as environmental trends and patterns to project sustainable policy projections for the future. Aims: The overall aim of this study-unit is to bridge the gap between scientific research, policy-making and public administration. In this vein, it seeks to equip students with the right analytical tools to read, understand, interpret and utilise national, European and international data indicators. In so doing, the unit helps students to analyse and interpret both statistical data, as well as qualitative narratives and visual evidence. Learning Outcomes: Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit, the student will be able to: - read, interpret and utilize national, European and international socio-economic indicators; - demonstrate familiarity with Maltese, European and international statistical authorities; - engage in the process of applying demographic statistics to the formulation of public policy; - determine how labour market statistics sustain and diversify national economy; - interpret the use of qualitative data as part of the public policy cycle; - - apply scientific evidence to the formulation of evidence-based policy. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - gain confidence in reading and interpreting official statistics, thus enhancing their statistical literacy; - enrich their research skills portfolio; - apply data analysis for policy development.
