DESCRIPTION | Study-unit Objective: This area purposes to analyse development under a perspective which parallels the economic one: including the perspective of the 'social', 'cultural' and 'political' aspects. Study-unit Content: Development is often narrowly defined in terms of economic progress and measured in terms of the increment of national output and wealth through industrialization. In this course, development is widely perceived as the progress of all aspects of human life and the whole of humankind. The issues taken into consideration include the distribution of wealth (on both the national and international levels), cultural patrimony and change, and human liberty. Particular focus will be placed on the debate centering around Modernization Theory and Dependency Theory and subsequent corpus of further empirical and theoretical literature. The development experience of Malta will be taken into consideration as a focal point. Reading List: - ALLEN,T., and THOMAS, A.
