DESCRIPTION | This study-unit consists of: - ninety (90) hours of supervised work in a public, parastatal, private organisation, or a non-governmental organisation. The students would be mentored and followed up on their work progress and experience; - ten (10) hours of report-writing designed to help the student to assimilate work experiences with the campus-based learning; these hours will be supervised by a campus-based mentor. Students will not be paid a wage or salary over and above their stipends during the placement; they will not be permitted to undertake overtime work or to accept a contract of employment or a contract for services before the expiration of the placement. The work assignments, arrangements for mentoring and supervision, and the precise timing of the placement will be agreed by the employer and the Department. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit is intended to: - Give students some exposure to an organisation; - Enable students to reflect deeply on issues of policy-making and management associated with the organisations which offer placements; - Enhance the thinking, organisational and social skills of students; - Engage in networking within organisations and public life; - Expose students to projects, schemes, events and other tasks that they will be delegated with by the organisation. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Analyse and explain the purpose, key operating principles and organisation of the work placement; - Recognise patterns of behaviour or organisation utilising the theories and insights provided by campus-based learning; - Reflect on the work experience, with a view to recognising preferences, strengths and areas for improvement. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Complete assigned tasks on time and to a high standard; - Communicate work-related messages, instructions, insights or questions, verbally and in writing with work supervisors, academic advisors and colleagues; - Problem solve; - Enhance intrapersonal and interpersonal skills; - Critically reflect on working relationships. |
