TITLE An Overview of Psychology

DESCRIPTION This study-unit offers students an overview of psychology. This study material is organized in four general sections: The first section consists of an introduction to psychology including perspectives in psychology and research methods in psychology; evolutionary and the biological roots of behaviour: the brain and the nervous system; Consciousness. The second section focuses on knowledge and thought including the psychology of learning; memory; thinking and language. The third section focuses on the person in context: cognitive and social development; social cognition and emotion and social influence and relationships. Finally the fourth section focuses on individual differences: intelligence; personality; motivation; psychopathology and treatment of mental health problems.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to offer non psychology students an overview of psychology which can facilitate their understanding of human development and behaviour in society.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe basic psychological concepts;
- Describe and explain the person's development in context;
- Recognise individual differences.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Illustrate basic knowledge of psychology;
- Synthesise their understanding of psychology;
- Recognise its effects on the individual and the individual in a wider context.
