TITLE Psychology for Health Carers

DESCRIPTION This study-unit is meant to introduce the health carer to important psychological aspects that are relevant to the health profession. It is an opportunity to reflect on psychological issues and concerns.

Tentative Study-unit Outline:

1. Professional Self-Identity: choosing a career according to one's self-concept. The function of Ideals and Values in one's personal life, family, profession and social life.
2. Some basic notions from social psychology: Primary vs. Secondary Relations; person oriented vs. task oriented approach to work; is it a job, a profession or vocation? The question of professional boundaries.
3. The role of emotions as an integrating factor in one's personality. Self-fulfillment as a result of finding meaning in life.
4. The problem of human suffering and death. How to respond to our inner feelings related to the problems of ultimate meaning. Coping skills.
5. Stress management: reconciling the profession with other important aspects of one's life.
6. Conflict management: how to deal with issues of conflict with staff, patients and the patients' family members.
7. Self-care: how to care for oneself while caring for others.
8. The problem of "burnout": how to keep the reservoir of energy and motivation constantly replenished.
