DESCRIPTION | Foundations in Human Biology is a study-unit that introduces students to the human organism and the impact of modern biology and medicinal discoveries on psychology. The unit covers anatomy/cytology and physiology of the main systems of the human body, with a special focus on the central nervous system. In addition, genetics and the relationship between humans and their environment will be described. Study-Unit Aims: Unit 1: - Human Organization - Exploring Life and Science - Chemistry of Life - Cell Structure and Function - Organization and Regulation of Body Systems Unit 2: - Maintenance of the Human Body - Cardiovascular System: Heart and Blood Vessels - Cardiovascular System: Blood - The Lymphatic and Immune Systems - Digestive System and Nutrition - Respiratory System - Urinary System Unit 3: - Movement and Support in Humans - Skeletal System - Muscular System Unit 4: - Integration and Coordination in Humans - Nervous System - Senses - Endocrine System Unit 5: - Reproduction and Development - Reproductive System - Human Development and Aging Unit 6: - Human Genetics - Patterns of Chromosome Inheritance - Patterns of Genetic Inheritance - DNA Biology and Technology Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe the basic principles of human biology; - Define the structure and functions of the human cell; - Integrate how nervous cells work; - Gain the necessary knowledge of the four main human senses; - Learn the main components of the human nervous system; - Synthesize the structure and functions of the major apparatus. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate critical thinking skills; - Recognise and apply subject-specific theories, paradigms, concepts or principles; - Analyse, synthesise and summarise information critically, including published research or reports; - Obtain and integrate several lines of subject-specific evidence to formulate and test hypotheses; - Apply subject knowledge and understanding to address familiar and unfamiliar problems; - Follow Biological Psychology 1 with profit.
