DESCRIPTION | This optional study-unit will combine experiential learning with active reflection on that learning. It will facilitate student participation in a number of meetings within University structures such as Senate, Council, Faculty Boards and Boards of Studies and recognise their preparation for the said meetings, as well as student participation in Senate-recognised Student Societies through their roles as executive members. It will also give students the opportunity to participate in a structured experiential seminar as well as to reflect on their learning through a reflective log on their practice. Study-Unit Aims: This optional study-unit will give university students the opportunity to participate in University administrative and academic affairs, or in the organisation of activities carried out by Student Societies, reflect on that participation and the consequent learning as well as develop their interpersonal and group skills. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Become cognisant of the impact student participation may have on the University’s responsiveness to changing educational needs; - Become more conversant with University structures; - Be able to increase awareness of the University’s response to societal needs. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Develop active participation in University structures; - Develop interpersonal skills and a strong work ethic; - Develop group skills; - Develop communication skills; - Become active citizens.
