DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will explore the application of psychological principles and techniques to the specific situations and problems of aviation. It provides a complete overview of the role of psychology in the field of aviation addressing the impact of physiological factors such as hypoxia, fatigue and licit and illicit drugs on pilot performance. It also focuses on the contribution of the field of psychology to the design of aviation systems, the selection and training of pilots, the psychological characteristics of pilots in relation to aviation safety, the issues in relation to decision making, issues of mental health and also passenger behaviour. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims to equip students with the introductory knowledge and the application of psychology to the field of aviation. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Understand the psychological effects of changes in altitude, fatigue levels, nutrition, chemical agents, illusions (sensory, somatogyral, somatogravic, vision and visual) and stress. - Describe the basic personality traits and how these are use in aviation psychology. - Formulate a basic plan for staff selection in the field of aviation. - Distinguish between different forms of training plans and their suitability in the aviation field. - Demonstrate a basic knowledge of human factors and their impact on the design of aviation systems. - Distinguish between different models of aeronautical decision making. - Demonstrate a basic understanding of the models of aviation safety. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Devise a basic training plan for a particular occupational group in aviation. - Construct a basic literature review in preparation for a evidence-based practice in the field of aviation. - Identify relevant tests and their application to the field of aviation.
