DESCRIPTION In this study unit, trainees will be presented with different conditions of children and adolescents with various types of developmental disabilities and childhood disorders. They will undertsand how to intervene on a psychotherapeutic and socio-educational level in an inclusive transdisciplinary team, critically evaluating the different types of support given and their underlying philosophy. The underlying concepts of Quality of Life and Self-determination will also be discussed. Trainees will also have some of their lectures in places where services are given.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & understanding: By the end of this study unit, the student will be able to:

- Understand a systems approach in treating children and adolescents keeping in mind a resilience perspective
- Understand issues of quality of life and self determination
- Have enough knowledge and understanding of child and adolescence developmental disorders and disabilities outlined above for an accurate diagnosis and their effects on the child’s development
- Understand the different services offered for children with the above conditions, their strengths and weaknesses
- The different philosophies behind different types of team work

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills): By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- make a diagnosis for the above mentioned conditions
- design an intervention plan together with the parents and other professionals
- use tools like MAPS, PATHS, COACH and VISTA to identify the learning objectives for children with severe and multiple disabilities
- use different questionnaires like: Quality of Life questionnaire for persons with severe impairment (Soresi and Nota), Quality of life of parents of children with disability Quality of life/ self efficacy of people working with persons with disability
