DESCRIPTION Students shall present a written dissertation of not more than 25,000 words in length on a subject proposed by them and approved by the Board.

The completed dissertation proposal form signed by the supervisor shall be submitted for approval by the Board of Studies by not later than the 1st of June of the first year.

If deemed necessary , an ethics form shall be presented to the Faculty Research Ethics Committee to be approved by the University Research Ethics Committee.

Students and supervisors are expected to hold regular meetings with their supervisor on a monthly basis.

Students shall be required to present the dissertation by not later than the 15th July. In the first instance three soft bound copies are to be presented.

The Dissertation shall be examined by a Board of Examiners appointed by Senate on the recommendation of the Board.

Following examination, hard bound copies should be submitted.

OBJECTIVES:

The dissertation should provide evidence of independent research and constitute an original contribution to the subject.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the dissertation the student would have learnt to:

- search the relevant literature on the subject under study and write up a focused critical review of such literature;
- develop a research question or a hypothesis;
- propose a research design that would enable him or her to explore the research question or test the hypothesis;
- analyse the strengths , weaknesses and limitations of the design;
- choose a qualitative or quantitative or a combined research method that best helps him or her answer the research question;
- take into account the relevant ethical considerations;
- write the results and discuss them in the light of the available literature;
- draw conclusions and recommendations that are relevant to the study.
