DESCRIPTION This unit examines the Psychology of Leadership and Management in detail, as specifically applied to Catholic Leadership in schools. Students will learn about and critically examine the classical and modern theories of leadership, including evidence from the latest research on transactional and transformational leadership and their application to a Catholic school context. Hands on sessions, where students will be able to identify, discuss, and challenge their own leadership styles will also be included. The specific local context of Catholic school will be kept in mind through the use of relevant examples, case studies, and discussions.

Study-unit Aims:

- Understanding and critically appraising the main classical theories of leadership including the concepts of autocratic, democratic and laissez faire leadership;
- Understanding and critically appraising modern conceptions of leadership including transactional and transformational leadership;
- Understanding and critically appraising the similarities and differences between leadership and management;
- Understanding one's personal leadership style;
- Examining the latest research on educational leadership, with particular reference to the specific context of Catholic schools and their ethos;
- Applying all the above to Catholic Leadership in schools in Malta.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Know how to define and critically appraise autocratic, democratic, and laissez-faire leadership styles in different contexts;
- Know what transactional and transformational leadership entail and be able to critically appraise their use in different contexts;
- Understand and critically apprais the principles behind contingency theories of leadership;
- Understand the strengths and weaknesses of their own particular leadership style;
- Consider the complex relationship between leadership and power;
- Discuss and critically appraise gender based and cross cultural issues in leadership;
- Critically appraise all ofthe above in the light of the Catholic approach to school leadership.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Assess their own predominant leadership style as well as that of others;
- Transfer the knowledge gained about leadership into actual situations which they may encounter in the workplace;
- Examine the impact of different leadership styles on individual and group behaviour;
- Increase sensitivity towards issues of diversity (such as gender, culture and sexual orientation) in individuals.
