UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Psychology

DESCRIPTION This study-unit provides an in depth examination of those neuropsychological disorders that are most commonly the focus of clinical attention. They include disorders of: Perception and cognition, Attention, Memory and Learning, Emotion and Social Behaviour, Executive Functioning, and Sensorimotor Functioning. The unit will also examine the neuropsychology of Degenerative disorders and Acquired brain injury. This modules also covers the general approaches used in managing the disorders. It also addresses the treatments and rehabilitation of the disorders.

Study-Unit Aims:

The main aim of the unit is to generate understanding of the various signs and symptoms of neurpsychological problems in the context of different clinical syndromes with an aim towards the development of accurate evaluation and diagnosis skills. This study unit is also aimed at enabling participants to develop a framework for assessing neuropsychological functions in adults. Participants will be expected to become familiar with the use of a variety of neuropsychological tests fand their use and interpretation for particular disorders. This will entail being able to determine which tests are applicable to which investigation is required, to create a rapport with adults, to administer the tests to adults, and to interpret and report the relevant findings.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of the neuropathology of different disorders;
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of the aetiological factors that affect the different neuropsychological disorders;
