DESCRIPTION | The study-unit introduces students to the knowledge and skills required in mammography to enable them to develop professional clinical competencies in this area. The study-unit will provide the knowledge required so that the students will be able to perform (under supervision) mammography views of the breast and to evaluate the technique used and the images obtained in the clinical environment. This study-unit is made up of clinical practice, tutorials, student centered learning and student managed learning. Individual tuition in mammography technique and quality control procedures and tests will be met in the clinical placement. Students are required to perform one week of clinical placements in screening and symptomatic breast clinics to achieve competency in mammography techniques. Students will work under the direct supervision of qualified radiographers. Assessment of the learning outcomes will be through mammography clinical competency assessment. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims to provide the clinical skills and knowledge in mammography to enable the student to develop the competencies to practice in screening and symptomatic breast clinics. Patient care and safety are also developed in this study-unit. The unit provides a practical learning environment which encourages competent, confident and safe working practices. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Competently and safely perform routine mammographic examinations to the standard necessary to optimise diagnostic accuracy; - Critically evaluate mammographic technique and diagnostic quality images and make recommendations to improve practice; - Describe the principal pathological conditions that affect the breast; and - Make informed critical judgments with regard to the operation of the x-ray imaging equipment and local established mammographic quality control practices. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Perform a mammographic examination; - Assess the images according to the PGMI evaluation criteria; - Communicate effectively with the patient; - Setup and perform the necessary daily quality control tests; - Ensure patient safety at all time; - Practice a high level of patient care for patients undergoing mammography examinations; and - Recognize benign and malignant breast diseases, and their work-up.
